The second championship game of the inaugural Inside Lacrosse Recruiting Invitational saw the Mesa Fresh Fever weather a comeback attempt and finish strong to defeat LB3 National, 8-4, and claim the 2017 division championship.

Malvern Prep product Billy Coyle shined for Mesa with three goals and an assist, putting on a final impressive display to top off his excellent tournament performance.

Mesa jumped out and scored early, and held a 5-1 halftime lead.

LB3, which was down 6-2 in the semi-finals against ADVNC before winning 8-7 in overtime, attempted another furious second-half comeback. They eventually brought the score to 5-4 before the end of the third quarter, but two big goals from Mesa’s Evan Haas in the fourth helped seal the win for the Philadelphia-based squad.

Nicky Solomon, Logan Eldridge, Jacob Medina, and Austin Abourjilie were the scorers for LB3. RJ Fink scored twice for Mesa, and Mac Updike scored once.

Mesa coach John Nostrant said his team, made up of players from more then a dozen schools, got better over the course of the weekend and showed a lot in pushing through to a championship.

“Whether it’s a summer event or not, it’s competition and you get to see a lot of what makes up a kid when it’s time to win a championship,” Nostrant said.
